Nearly every summer holiday we spend our time traveling over to the USA visiting family and friends which includes a Midwest stop, and if I’m lucky, a trip out to the Vail Valley. It just so happened that this year our trip to Colorado coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Leadville Trail 100 MTB; a savage mountain bike race that is held an hour away from where we stay.
As an old mining town, we had previously been to Leadville many years ago when the kids were younger and into Minecraft. This year, my oldest son Ellis started riding and was willing to join me in waking up at 5:00am to make the 6:15 start of the pro riders.
As we drove into town and started looking for a place to park, the race energy was palable as most of the cars that were already parked had bike racks on them and the handful of amateurs that were not already staged in their assigned start blocks were riding down to the start area.
After we parked the car, Ellis and I grabbed our cameras and made a quick walk to the staging area where the pro men and women were already lined-up. We had about 10 minutes until the shotgun start where I found a spot that wasn’t too crowded to shoot some photos.
After the pros were sent off, I reparked the car (my OCD kicking-in) and Ellis and I watched the waves of amateurs be sent-off for their version of the Race Across the Sky.
